It’s Been a While…Let’s Hop, Skip, and Go Naked

So, I have been away much too long. Excuses could be thrown, as I have a few legitimate ones. For instance, I am actually changing my career path, and taking on a new job soon. It should be fun, and will take me to some new places to try out food, and review here. For now, we won’t dwell on my absence, and we’ll talk a little about what this is all about: food.

More specifically with New Years Eve coming tomorrow, what is everyone going to eat? Anyone out there throwing some wild and crazy parties? Personally, it’s pretty low key this year, with only a few friends coming over for some shenanigans. Last year was a bit crazier, and I cooked a boat load. This year is a tad easier…

So, for pre-dinner fooodage, I’m just throwing together a simple cheese and veggie platter with crackers. Nice, easy, and everyone usually is happy with it. For dinner, I think we’re doing the cop out this year, and ordering Chinese takeout. I’ve always heard that this is a New Years staple, but have never done it myself until now.

And to the important part: the drinks! This year, I will once again be making Hop, Skip, and Go Naked Punch. The recipe is as follows, so enjoy!

Hop, Skip, and Go Naked Punch

  • 6 oz. Limeade Concentrate
  • 6 oz. Lemonade Concentrate
  • 2 liters of lemon-lime soda
  • 8 oz. Bacardi 151
  • 8 oz. Peach Schnapps

Note: The measurements are pretty flexible, and mine usually gets made with extra booziness 🙂

What’s New: Stocking the Bar

Summer heat brings with it the need for cool and tasty refreshment. What better way to do that than with refreshing lemonade? Oh wait, I know! Add booze to make said refreshing and tasty beverage.

With this in mind, I set out to make some nice additions to my bar cabinet for the summer. I’m not a particularly big drinker, I may have one beverage a week, tops, but still enjoy having the option to get creative, and mix what I want. To the liquor store!!!

I decided to buy some nice ingredients that are usually key in some of my favorite mixed drinks: midori, blue curacao, triple sec, grenadine, some sour mix, and a new premixed drink that I found. First lets talk about the lemonade: of the electric variety.

Electric lemonade is a sweet and tart cocktail perfect for the summer heat. It’s pretty potent, kind of reminiscent of a sour patch kid, but delicious all the same. To make one, you’ll need the following:

(For reference, 1.5 oz = 1 shot)

  • 1 1/2 oz. vodka (used Smirnoff citrus)
  • 1/2 oz. Blue Curacao (modified to 3/4 oz. = 1/2 shot)
  • 2 oz. sour mix (modified to 2 1/4 oz.  = 1 1/2 shots)
  • 7 – up (used diet because I’m me)

See, really easy to make. Add some ice, a lemon wedge, and cherry and now you’ve got a cocktail worthy of the Bahamas. In the future, I think I’ll pick Sprite Zero over the 7-up because for some reason, I just think that 7-up is nasty. Just tastes weird to me. Still, this is a tasty drink that you can really enjoy. Just a warning, it’s really easy to knock back quickly, so don’t hurt yourself folks.

So this post is kind of a double-header because of the premixed drink I also purchased at the liqour store. Father’s day weekend lead to me trying a drink mixed by my mother’s boyfriend using Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka. He had mixed it with lemonade to make an awesome hard Arnold Palmer. With that, I was excited to see a premixed sweet tea using the stuff in the store, and decided to grab it.

Now, this premixed stuff was pretty good, but I think I’ll buy the sweet tea vodka straight next time, and mix my own. As with most premixed drinks, I found the mix to be a bit off in the direction of a bit too strong. Don’t get me wrong, it was a tasty, hard Arnold Palmer, but that first sip left a face. After a while, and some melting of the ice, it got better. I think that I might cut the rest with a little lemonade to blend it a bit better. That, and I can get it to last a bit longer through the 4th of July weekend that way.

So, here is another unique summer mixing drink for you to think about. Much better than your standard fruity vodka flavors, this sweet tea vodka, has a very unique taste, leaving you knowing that it’s tea.

Here;s to a responsible, and tasty summer!
