It’s Not Ice Cream: Talenti Gelato

So, I consider myself a fairly adventuresome eater, and am willing to try almost anything once (I’ll definitely “try” it more if I like it). Still, when it comes to Ice Cream, or “frozen desserts” I have pretty faithfully stuck by Ben & Jerry’s.

Well, a while back I stopped by a neat little place called Swan Chocolates in Merrimack, and managed to try some of their homemade gelato. Without going into a review of that, let’s just say that my eyes were opened to the possible wonders that gelato holds.

Now, for a little context. I won’t paste the Wikipedia article here, but I will point out that gelato differs from ice cream primarily by using less butterfat, and less sugar. The result is a much creamier texture, and a more vibrant flavor in every taste. Now this doesn’t really make gelato any healthier,  but it does make it a very different frozen animal.

Okay, on to the actual review. For a long time now, Talenti gelato has been catching my eye as it is parked next to my beloved Ben & Jerry’s in my local grocery store’s frozen food aisle. You can see some of the allure in the image above. Even though the shot is straight from Talenti’s website, it’s actually what it looked like in person (you know, excluding the cookie and caramel sitting next to it). Really, the stuff comes in a neat little plastic container with a screw top so you can see the food you’re buying. It’s pretty novel, and very eye-catching…you to distract you from the nearly five dollar price tag.

To the actual flavor: holy wow on my taste buds Batman! Gelato really doesn’t beat around the bush when it comes to getting flavor to your brain. It’s instant, and delicious. It’s hard to put my finger on one flavor, but it’s really like the most pure cookies and cream flavor that I’ve ever tasted, infused with a rich, and decadent caramel that adds a deep body to the ice cream’s taste. Needless to say, more than one of these has already been consumed since I discovered this flavor. I haven’t even grabbed Ben & Jerry’s since. Now I’m not saying that this is better than the old B & J, but it’s definitely completely different, and a nice change of pace.

If you want to try something with a little more class, and give yourself a treat, try Talenti Gelato out. I will again, and will bring some thoughts on their other flavors here as well.

Review: Mint Oreo Fudge Cremes

Can something be better than a Girl Scout Thin Mint? I know, some readers may scoff at the question. Who could honestly question the cookie superiority that is the Thin Mint, that one box that is most fought over in the house, and can disappear in single sittings? Oreo can.

I know this might sound sacrilegious, but I think I may actually like these mint fudge cremes more than the Thin Mint. I didn’t feel this way at first with a test straight out of the package, but once these had sat in the freezer, doubt of the holy Thin Mint crept into my heart.

What makes these so amazing you might ask. Well for starters, my local Walmart caries them for $1.98. There is no going wrong with that price tag. Also, they are available year round…Okay, maybe there are some problems here, but they are in the right (unhealthy) direction. But still, price and availability do not a great cookie make. These are good.

Let me break this down for you. While a Thin Mint is great in it’s chocolate coating, the fudge cremes really do pull off a fudgy chocolate coating that packs a thicker chocolate punch. The insides use half of an Oreo cookie with that unique filling as a base except that it has been mint-i-fied to perfection. This cookie is my dream of a Thin Mint somehow made better. Some may doubt me. That’s okay, but before you judge, try these for yourselves, and join me on the dark side… We have cookies; tasty, minty, fudgy, thin-mint-beating cookies.

What’s New: Ben & Jerry’s Snickerdoodle Cookie

Nothing makes me stop more quickly in a grocery store than seeing the label “New”, or “Limited Edition” on a pint of Ben & Jerry’s. Now, for this to happen in a gas station is A: surprising, and B: slightly embarrassing when a cute girl sees you do it. Still, there’s not much to do, but shrug it off because it’s not like you can take it back.

This was the scenario that happened recently in a Circle K gas station when my friends and I were out on a Chinese food run. We had swung into the station to grab something sweet to follow up our takeout meal with, and low-and-behold if there wasn’t this new flavor in a gas station.

Well, who am I to deny fate. I grabbed the pint of Ben & Jerry’s new Snickerdoodle Cookie ice cream, and went on my merry way. Returning home, we enjoyed our dinner, and later on, I cracked open this pint to see what I had found for myself.

The flavor is described as “Buttery Ice Cream Loaded with Snickerdoodle Cookies”. What I saw when I opened the pint was a caramel colored ice cream, with hints of what might be cookie, and also a big chunk missing that meant a bad freezing process on my pint. Oh well, no use crying over ice cream that wasn’t there. I dug into the pint, and my hunch was confirmed. It seems to be the same base used in Ben & Jerry’s Cinnamon Bun, and Oatmeal Cookie Chunk ice creams. Going through the pint did turn up some noteworthy chunks of snickerdoodle cookie in true Ben & Jerry fashion. Still, I found this pint lacking.

You see, both of the previous flavors bring more to the table than this one. Cinnamon Buns has that amazing cinnamon swirl with the bun dough, and Oatmeal has a better quality cookie along with fudge. This flavor wasn’t bad, but it still plays second fiddle to the two other flavors. I’d probably pick them over this any day.

Sweet Tooth: New Ben & Jerry’s Edition

Ben & Jerry's Boston Cream Pie Ice CreamWhat’s your weakness when it comes to a treat? Everybody has one. It’s that food that they can’t turn down. Hungry, full, it doesn’t matter, it always sounds delicious. Well for me and my diet, the one thing that I always crave is Ice Cream. I know I’ve mentioned it before, but Stone Cold Creamery named their sizes right when they used the term “Gotta have it” when referring to Ice Cream. Still, one brand sticks out above the rest for me: Ben & Jerry’s. No other company has the selection and quality of flavors that they do. (Purely my opinion of course)

That said, the company is also always coming out with new flavors. Two of which have caughtBen & Jerry's Milk and Cookies my eye recently. Above is one of the new flavors, and it caused my jaw to hit the floor when I saw it: Ben & Jerry’s Boston Cream Pie. Now I don’t know about you, but when I was a kid, I always fought tooth and nail to get those Boston Cream Pie donuts. The pie itself was never really served around me, but I learned to love the concept from delicious and tasty donuts. When I saw this flavor, and read the description, I had to have it.

It’s as good as it sounds. the actual ice cream tastes like the pie, and has the cream swirling through it. Top that off with my favorite mix in for ice cream (cake pieces) and I’m all over it. This is a must try for anyone with a sweet tooth. Warning: It’s rich!

Now far be it from me to leave the other delicious flavor that I found sitting next to this item in the grocery store out in the cold. Needless to say, this was a day when I walked away from the store with not one, but two pints of ice cream. The other new flavor I tried was Ben & Jerry’s Milk & Cookies ice cream.

For all of you cookie dough ice cream lovers, this is your god. Bow down and worship it. What do you get in this pint? You do get your standard vanilla with hunks of cookie dough, which alone is great. Now step it up. Add chocolate chocolate chip cookie dough hunks to the mix. Now we’re talkin. But wait, there’s more. Also swirl in cookie through the entirety of the ice cream. We have delicious overload people.

Ok, why are you still reading? Shouldn’t you already be half way to your nearest frozen food isle to grab one of these tasty treats? I thought so…
